Case Study: A Formulation Team Uses Software-First Chemistry Before Committing to Hardware
A European biotech with a small formulation group needed to scale recipe design and synthesis planning without buying another benchtop reactor before they knew their lead candidates. They had PubChem and in-house data; what they lacked was a single environment where recipes could be built, G-code generated, and runs simulated before any capital spend.
The situation. The team had evaluated two chemistry platforms that started with hardware: both required a six-figure equipment commitment and long lead times. Management wanted to see recipe output, yield assumptions, and a clear path to G-code-driven synthesis before approving the spend. The question was whether a “software-first” approach could de-risk the decision.
What they did. They licensed the Chemical Cooker package from Christopher Gabriel Brown: subscription and serial-key validation, lite Alchemy data (elements, methods, probabilities), recipe builder, and G-code generation. They used the drug database integration for lead compounds and ran G-code in dry-run mode. No physical cooker was purchased in the first 12 months. The legal foundation document was reviewed by their IP and compliance team to clarify the boundary between discovery, recipe design, and regulated production.
Outcome. The team produced over 40 candidate recipes and a shortlist of five for pilot synthesis. When they were ready to commit to hardware, they used the supplied BOM, assembly, and calibration documentation to specify their benchtop build. Capital approval was granted on the basis of the documented path from recipe to G-code to physical run. The handoff was treated as a single, coherent path rather than a software product and an unrelated hardware spec.
Takeaway. Software-first chemistry does not replace the need for physical synthesis—it shifts the point at which capital is committed. For formulation teams and research groups, the value is working in a controlled data environment with a clear handoff to hardware when the time is right.
